Neighborhood Degree<\/a>, a community-rooted organization and Kars4Kids small grant<\/a> recipient, is working to create consistent support systems for young people as they grow. From early engagement to long-term academic guidance, its programs are designed to remove barriers and open doors for students who may otherwise lack access to key opportunities.<\/p>\n

By weaving together mentorship, enrichment, and family involvement, the organization takes a comprehensive approach to student success\u2014one that extends beyond the classroom and into the broader community. We put some questions to CEO Stephanie Benthin to learn more about this work.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: To begin, what can you tell us about Visalia and the children you serve? How would you describe your community and demographic?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: Visalia is a beautiful and diverse community in the Central Valley of California, full of talented and resilient families. However, many of the families we serve face significant economic and educational barriers. About 95% of our families live below the federal poverty line and less than 10% hold a college degree. Most of our students are the first in their families to attend college and some families are navigating language barriers, financial instability, or limited access to professional networks.<\/p>\n

At Neighborhood Degree, we believe that talent and potential are evenly distributed, but opportunity often is not. Our work is about building a community of support around students so they can discover their gifts, pursue education or career training, and ultimately reach their full potential.<\/p>\n

\"Neighborhood<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: As your name suggests, community plays a central role in Neighborhood Degree\u2019s work. Why did you choose to engage the community in helping children overcome obstacles and succeed?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: We believe lasting change happens through relationships. When students are surrounded by caring adults\u2014mentors, coaches, teachers, and neighbors\u2014they begin to believe in their own potential.<\/p>\n

Neighborhood Degree was built on the idea that the whole community can play a role in helping young people succeed. By connecting volunteers, parents, schools, and local organizations, we create a circle of support around each student. That sense of belonging and encouragement opens doors and helps students imagine a future they may not have believed was possible before.<\/p>\n

\"Mentor<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: Can you give us an overview of your Lunch Buddies program?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: Lunch Buddies is one of our simplest but most powerful programs. Community volunteers come to campus during lunch to sit with students, share a meal, and spend time talking and encouraging them.<\/p>\n

For many students, having a consistent adult show up each week to listen, laugh, and care about them can make a huge difference. These relationships build confidence and connection, and they help students feel seen and supported during their school day.<\/p>\n

\"Buddies<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: You also operate a soccer program during the fall season. What role does soccer play in shaping the lives of the children you serve?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: Sports are a powerful way to build character, confidence, and community. However, many of our families cannot afford to have their children participate in organized sports because it is cost prohibitive.\u00a0 We offer a very low-cost option, sponsored by local donors and volunteer coaches, to ensure that every child can have the opportunity to be part of a team. Our soccer program gives students a chance to be active, develop teamwork, and experience the joy of working toward a common goal.<\/p>\n

For many students, this may be their first opportunity to participate in organized sports. Through soccer they learn perseverance, discipline, and how to support their teammates\u2014skills that carry over into school and life.<\/p>\n

\"children<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: You have programs that encourage parents to help create a warmer, more supportive school environment. Can you tell us more about these initiatives? Why is parent involvement so important in a child\u2019s education?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: We\u2019ve learned over the years that if you really want to change a student\u2019s trajectory, you have to come alongside the whole family. Parents are a child\u2019s first and most influential teachers, and when they feel supported, connected, and empowered, everything changes for their kids.<\/p>\n

One of the most beautiful expressions of this is our\u00a0Juntos<\/strong>\u00a0program, where parents gather in community to build relationships, grow in leadership, and support one another. It creates a sense of belonging; parents realize they\u2019re not alone, and that matters more than we often realize.<\/p>\n

We also host\u00a0Parent Caf\u00e9s<\/strong>, which are peer-based mental health support groups. These are safe spaces where parents can share their stories, talk about challenges, and encourage one another. What\u2019s powerful is that the wisdom comes from the group\u2014parents begin to see their own strength and resilience.<\/p>\n

In addition, we offer\u00a0parent classes<\/strong>\u00a0that meet very practical needs, things like first-time home buying, financial coaching, legal services, and connecting families to community resources. Many of our parents just haven\u2019t had access to this kind of information before, and when they do, it opens doors not just for them, but for their children.<\/p>\n

We also have\u00a0Parent Connectors<\/strong>. This is a group of parents from the community who are trained and equipped to walk alongside other families. They help connect parents to resources like housing support, legal help, financial services, and mental health care. It\u2019s neighbor helping neighbor, and it builds trust in a way programs alone can\u2019t.<\/p>\n

All of this creates a stronger, more connected school community. When parents feel confident and supported, they show up differently, not just for themselves but for their children, for their school, and for our community\u2019s future. And ultimately, that\u2019s what we\u2019re after: not just helping a student succeed, but helping an entire family and an entire city thrive.<\/p>\n

\"Neighborhood<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: What is LEAD? What are the goals of this program, and what do students do as participants?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: LEAD is our leadership development program for 6th<\/sup> grade students. The goal is to help young people discover their strengths, practice leadership skills, and learn how they can positively impact their community.<\/p>\n

Students participate in weekly leadership lessons, small group discussions, and activities that build confidence, teamwork, and character. We want students to begin seeing themselves not just as learners, but as leaders who can make a difference in their school and city. In addition, they get to practice their leadership skills by planning and executing service projects on their school campus, and helping school staff and parents create fun and engaging school events.<\/p>\n

\"Group<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: How does the LIFT program support students, and what makes it unique?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: LIFT is designed to encourage and support students as they move through middle and high school. These years can be challenging, and students benefit from consistent mentoring and guidance.<\/p>\n

Through LIFT, students build relationships with mentors and participate in activities that strengthen life skills, resilience, and academic motivation. The program helps students stay connected to positive influences during a critical stage of their development.<\/p>\n

\"Neighborhood<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: LAUNCH and LINK support students on their path to and through college and careers. Can you tell us about these programs and how they guide students at each stage?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: Our long-term goal is to help students get to and through a college or career degree program so they can reach their full potential.<\/p>\n

LAUNCH helps high school students prepare for their next steps after graduation\u2014exploring career options, applying to college or technical training programs, and completing financial aid applications.<\/p>\n

LINK continues that support once students begin college or career training. Students stay connected with mentors and a network of volunteers who encourage them, provide guidance, and help them navigate the challenges of completing their degree.<\/p>\n

One of the most powerful parts of LINK is that many of our college students come back and serve as interns and leaders in our programs with younger students. They become role models.\u00a0 They are real, relatable examples of what it looks like to go to college and pursue a career.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re not just receiving support anymore, they\u2019re giving it. And in doing that, they help create a college-going culture in our neighborhood where younger students can see, \u201cSomeone like me did this\u2026 maybe I can too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"LAUNCH<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: What\u2019s next for Neighborhood Degree?<\/h2>\n

Stephanie Benthin: One of our most exciting next steps is the opening of the Neighborhood Community Center, with our Grand Opening on\u00a0August 8th, 2026<\/strong>. This has been a dream in the making for many years, and it represents a huge step forward for our students, families, and the entire neighborhood.<\/p>\n

This space will allow us to expand our programs in deeper and more consistent ways, providing a central hub where mentoring, leadership development, family support, and community connection can happen every day. It will be a place where students can come after school to learn and grow, where parents can access resources and build relationships, and where volunteers can invest in the next generation.<\/p>\n

More than just a building, the Community Center is about creating a sense of belonging. It\u2019s a place where relationships are formed, where people are known and supported, and where hope for the future begins to take shape.<\/p>\n

\"Neighborhood<\/h2>\n

We\u2019re especially excited about how this space will allow us to strengthen our \u201ckinder to career\u201d pipeline, walking with students over the long haul and surrounding them with consistent encouragement and opportunity at every stage of their journey.<\/p>\n

Our vision is simple but powerful: to connect neighbors, expand opportunity, and help young people move from kindergarten to career with the support of an entire community behind them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
