One to One Mentoring<\/a> has spent more than three decades helping young people in Colorado\u2019s San Miguel County build confidence, resilience, and meaningful connections through long-term mentoring relationships. Serving youth from all walks of life, the organization pairs children and teens with caring adult mentors who provide consistency, encouragement, and support during some of the most formative years of life.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1994, One to One Mentoring has evolved into a deeply community-rooted program that works closely with families, schools, healthcare providers, and local organizations to ensure young people feel seen, supported, and connected. In addition to one-on-one mentoring, the nonprofit offers group activities, community events, and ongoing professional support designed to help youth strengthen social skills, develop self-esteem, and experience a stronger sense of belonging. The organization\u2019s thoughtful, relationship-centered approach is especially meaningful in the rural communities it serves, where access to resources and supportive adult relationships can sometimes be limited.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids recently awarded One to One Mentoring a small grant<\/a> in recognition of the organization\u2019s impactful work supporting youth through trusted mentoring relationships and community connection. To learn more about the program and the philosophy behind its work, we put some questions to One to One Mentoring Program Director Adrienne Christy.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids:<\/strong> For readers who may not be familiar with your work, can you tell us about the youth you serve in San Miguel County\u2014their ages, backgrounds, and some of the challenges they face?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: One to One Mentoring serves youth ages 6\u201318 throughout San Miguel County through professionally supported mentoring relationships. The young people we work with come from a wide range of backgrounds, including immigrant and bilingual families, youth experiencing social isolation, children navigating family transitions, and youth facing mental health, academic, or behavioral challenges. We support youth living in rural communities where access to services, transportation, and consistent adult support can be limited. While every child\u2019s story is different, many are looking for connection, stability, confidence, and a trusted adult relationship that helps them feel supported and seen.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids:<\/strong> One to One Mentoring serves youth from diverse backgrounds, including immigrant families, those with chronic health challenges, and more. The wide range of children you work with requires a thoughtful approach. How does the organization ensure each child feels seen and supported?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: We take an individualized and relationship-centered approach to mentoring. Before matching a child with a mentor, staff spend time getting to know the youth, their family, their interests, and their goals. We work closely with parents, caregivers, schools, and referral partners to understand what kind of support will best help each child thrive. Our staff provide ongoing case management and regular check-ins with both mentors and families to ensure the relationship remains healthy and responsive to the child\u2019s needs. We also prioritize cultural responsiveness, communication, and flexibility so families feel welcomed and respected.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: Your mentoring model is described as \u201cprofessionally supported.\u201d What role does staff play in guiding and strengthening each mentor-mentee match?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: Professional support is one of the core strengths of our program. Staff are involved throughout the entire mentoring relationship, from the initial screening and training process to ongoing match support. We carefully match mentors and mentees based on personality, interests and needs. Once a match is made, our case managers maintain regular contact with mentors, youth, and caregivers through check-ins, coaching, and support conversations. Staff help mentors navigate challenges, celebrate successes, access resources, and maintain healthy boundaries. This level of support helps relationships remain safe, consistent, and meaningful over time.<\/p>\n

\"one<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: At One to One Mentoring, your mentee\/mentor matches last an average of more than three years\u2014well above the national norm. What factors help those relationships grow and endure over time?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: We believe long-lasting relationships are built through consistency, trust, and support. We are intentional in how we make matches and ensure mentors understand the importance of commitment from the beginning. Our staff provide ongoing guidance, so mentors never feel like they are navigating challenges alone, and we focus on strong communication and realistic expectations with families.<\/p>\n

Our small rural community also plays an important role in helping relationships grow over time. Through group activities, community events, and ongoing engagement opportunities, mentors, mentees, and families often become naturally connected within the broader community. Matches frequently begin to integrate into one another\u2019s lives in meaningful ways like seeing each other at local events, school activities, or community gatherings. This helps relationships feel more natural and consistent. The longer a mentoring relationship lasts, the greater the impact we often see in a young person\u2019s confidence, resilience, and sense of belonging.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: Your program places a strong focus on helping youth build identity and confidence. How does that growth typically unfold within the mentoring relationship?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: Confidence and identity often grow through consistent experiences of encouragement, trust, and positive connection. Mentors help youth discover strengths, try new activities, set goals, and feel successful in everyday moments. Sometimes growth looks big, like speaking up more in school or joining a new activity, and sometimes it is quieter, like feeling more comfortable expressing emotions or asking for help. Having a trusted adult who listens without judgment and shows up consistently can have a powerful impact on how a young person sees themselves and their future.<\/p>\n

\"mentor<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: Becoming a mentor involves training, screening, and ongoing check-ins. What qualities make someone a strong mentor, and how are they prepared for the role?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: Strong mentors are caring, dependable, patient, and willing to show up consistently for a young person. Mentors do not need to be experts or have all the answers, they simply need to be supportive adults who are committed to building a relationship. A good mentor is also someone who is not looking to \u201csave\u201d a child or fix perceived deficits. We believe young people already have incredible strengths, talents, and individuality. The role of a mentor is to honor who a young person already is, help them recognize their own strengths, and create space where they feel safe being their authentic self. Mentoring is not about achieving specific outcomes or forcing change, it is about connection, listening, trust, and showing up authentically so youth can do the same.<\/p>\n

All mentors complete an application, interview, background check, reference checks, and training before being matched. Training covers topics such as communication skills, boundaries, trauma-informed practices, youth development, and cultural awareness. Once matched, mentors continue to receive support, resources, and guidance from program staff throughout the relationship.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids:<\/strong> In addition to one-on-one mentoring, the program includes group activities and community engagement. What do children gain from that broader sense of connection?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: Group activities and community events help youth feel connected not only to their mentor, but also to a broader supportive community. These experiences give young people opportunities to build friendships, develop social skills, try new activities, and experience a sense of belonging. These group settings are also an important space for peer connection, where youth can build relationships with other young people who are part of the program and feel a sense of shared experience.<\/p>\n

Just as importantly, group activities allow youth to get to know multiple trusted adult mentors in a positive, informal setting. The more safe, familiar, and supportive adult faces a young person sees in their community, the stronger and more secure their sense of belonging becomes. This creates a wider circle of trust and contributes to a safer, more connected environment for youth across our community. For many youth in rural communities, opportunities for connection and enrichment can be limited, so these experiences are especially meaningful.<\/p>\n

\"Three<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids:<\/strong> Community partnerships and events\u2014from fundraisers to family gatherings\u2014are a visible part of your work. How do these efforts strengthen the program\u2019s impact and reach?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: Partnerships are essential to the success of our program. We collaborate closely with schools, healthcare providers, local nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations to identify youth who may benefit from mentoring and connect families with resources. We also work alongside our local Communities That Care<\/a> coalition to advocate more broadly for youth wellbeing across our community and collaborate regionally with organizations supporting immigrant families and populations.<\/p>\n

Because we are a small rural community, so much of our work is rooted in personal relationships and collaboration. We could not support our matches at the level we do without strong community partners who help families feel connected, supported, and seen. Community events and fundraisers not only help sustain our programming financially, but also increase awareness about the importance of mentoring, connection, and youth mental health. Family gatherings and community activities strengthen relationships between families, mentors, and staff, helping create a broader network of support for young people across San Miguel.<\/p>\n

\"one<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: Feedback and data collection are part of how the One to One Mentoring program evolves. How are insights from participating youth and families used to refine and improve services? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: We regularly gather feedback from youth, families, mentors, and community partners through surveys, check-ins, and conversations. We use both data and personal experiences to better understand what is working well and where additional support may be needed. Feedback helps shape mentor trainings, improve communication practices, guide program development, and identify emerging needs within the community. We are also in the process of implementing a youth advisory panel to help ensure youth voice remains central in our organizational programming and decision-making. We want participating families and youth to feel that their voices matter and that their experiences directly influence how the program grows and improves.<\/p>\n

Kars4Kids: What\u2019s next for One to One Mentoring? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adrienne Christy: Our goal is to continue strengthening and expanding access to mentoring for youth across San Miguel County. We are focused on growing our volunteer mentor network, increasing support for families, and continuing to provide high-quality, professionally supported mentoring relationships. We also hope to deepen partnerships with schools and community organizations to better respond to the changing needs of local youth.
