Founded in 2012, the nonprofit now runs more than 20 programs a year for close to 500 kids, from after-school ski lessons for elementary schoolers to multi-day backpacking trips and paid internships for teens.

The nonprofit is named for ski mountaineer Doug Coombs, who died in a skiing accident in 2006. His wife, Emily, started what’s now Coombs Outdoors so local kids could grow up in the mountains the way their own son did, regardless of what their family could pay. Kids move through three stages as they get older: Activate introduces young children to skiing, hiking, and rivers; Engage adds backpacking, climbing, and other harder pursuits for middle schoolers; and Empower places teens in real internships, from ski instructing to physical therapy.

Coombs Outdoors is a recipient of a small grant from Kars4Kids. We put some questions to Development & Communications Manager Molly Watters to find out more.

Kars4Kids: Can you tell us a bit about Coombs Outdoors’ mission and the young people it serves in Teton County?

Molly Watters: People come from around the world to experience Jackson Hole’s public lands and recreation opportunities. However, not all local families have this same access to outdoor recreation and the benefits it provides for physical wellbeing, mental health, skill building, and social connection. We believe all youth should have the opportunity to participate in our community’s outdoor culture and build skills and confidence through adventure, so we run over 20 programs year-round for over 470 kids annually. Our mission is to empower local youth to grow and thrive by reducing barriers to outdoor recreation through programs, mentorship, and community building.

Kars4Kids: Activate serves your youngest kids. What does that program look like day-to-day, and what are you trying to give them at that age?

Molly Watters: While Activate encompasses programs across all four seasons and many different activities, it serves primarily as an introduction to the outdoor activities that they will explore as they grow through Coombs. Activate programs are also a place for children to bond with their peers, try new things, and learn interpersonal skills, all while developing a connection to their local mountains, trails, rivers, and lakes. At the beginning of a week of Activate programs, a group will sit together, get to know each other, and build a community contract. This is when we agree on a set of guidelines and reaffirm that everyone is welcome. Some of our favorite Activate activities are swimming in the river, hiking in Grand Teton National Park, picking wildflowers, and arts and crafts. In the winter we have kids in afterschool ski lessons six days a week at our local ski mountain and Nordic skiing twice a week. We also run afterschool programs in the fall and winter, swimming lessons in the summer and fall, and spring break day camp for this age group. Our programs are very intentionally structured so that by the time kids are graduating to Engage middle school programs, they are comfortable at Coombs and have a foundation for the next steps of their journey with the outdoors.

Kars4Kids: Engage is the next step up. How does it build on Activate, and what’s different about it?

Molly Watters: In Engage programs participants begin to take part in more challenging activities, build advanced skills, and figure out what they are passionate about. Kids grow through Activate knowing that the step to Engage programs comes with more freedom, more adventure, and more responsibility. Instead of day camp and short hikes, participants will go on longer backpacking trips in the backcountry of the Tetons, Yellowstone, Wind River Range, and more, learning how to camp safely in bear country, and experiencing the pride you feel after accomplishing something hard. Kids also spend time developing skills like kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing, and rock climbing every week. One of the great things about Engage is that kids get to try so many different sports and activities, so over time participants learn what they enjoy the most and are able to pursue that passion. In the winter, Engage participants ski with their friends weekly, supported by volunteer mentors, many of whom are former participants themselves. We also have a spring break trip and afterschool programs for this age group in the fall and winter, especially to give participants a way to be supported, social, and off of screens when they’re not at school.

Kars4Kids: Empower serves your oldest participants. What does that program involve, and what are kids working toward by the time they reach it?

Molly Watters: Empower is the culmination of the Coombs experience. Most Empower participants have been in programs since they were in elementary school, so they have truly grown up in our Coombs community. These high schoolers work very closely with the Empower program manager, who facilitates professional development workshops, helps students build resumes and college applications, and works with each participant to find a local internship that suits their skills, interests, and aspirations. Each participant is connected with an internship in the outdoor industry, from ski instructing and retail to plant biology and physical therapy. Interns spend the summer working and learning time management, communication, and general professional skills that will continue to serve them throughout their lives. Many interns continue these jobs through the fall and winter as well, developing their own relationships with their workplaces where they are often invited back to work after their internship ends. We also support Empower participants in their college exploration and application processes, including scholarship workshops and a college visit trip every spring.

Empower participants show that they are ready for responsibility and have a real desire to take what they have learned throughout Coombs programs and apply it in their lives. For instance, every summer Coombs takes on four Empower interns to instruct summer Activate and Engage programs. Every year it is incredible to see the same young adults who were in programs themselves the season before step up and help lead younger kids who look up to them. This full-circle experience and leadership development is really coming to fruition over the last couple years as our earliest cohorts of kids have grown up and are graduating high school.

Kars4Kids: What kinds of barriers do local families face in accessing outdoor recreation, and how does Coombs Outdoors address them?

Molly Watters: The primary barrier to outdoor recreation for local families is financial. Many of the activities that are central to Jackson culture are prohibitively expensive, and we work hard to keep our programs affordable and our fees are always on a pay-what-you-can-when-you-can basis. However, there are many other barriers that tend to get overlooked. Jackson Hole has a strong immigrant and Spanish-speaking population, so all of our communications are sent in both English and Spanish, and our entire program staff is bilingual. We also work to build the generational knowledge component of these activities that presents another large barrier, since many families didn’t grow up doing any outdoor recreation due to where they lived or the financial constraints of their own upbringings. In addition to youth programming we have expanded our adult programming, which not only provides parents and families with all of the benefits of outdoor recreation, but reinforces the positive connection to the outdoors – and our Jackson Hole community – for the whole family. With parents learning to ski and recreate in the mountains, families begin to build a wealth of knowledge that will continue to get passed down.

Kars4Kids: How do skills like confidence and leadership, built through activities like skiing, hiking, or biking, carry over into other parts of kids’ lives?

Molly Watters: Our programs don’t just expose kids to outdoor recreation; they give them practice overcoming challenges and feeling a sense of accomplishment. By working through fear on a steep ski slope, a tough section on the rock climbing wall, frustration with mosquitos or rain, or embarrassment from falling off their bike, kids prove to themselves that they can do hard things. We have witnessed this confidence build in our participants over time and heard directly from them that their outdoor experiences helps them believe they can overcome other challenges in their lives, whether at school, home, or work.

Kars4Kids: Can you share a specific moment or story that captures the impact of your programs on a participant?

Molly Watters: We’ll share a quote from a recent graduate. Every spring we send a survey to our graduating seniors asking for their favorite memory from their time with Coombs. This young man started with Coombs at age 7 and worked for us as an instructor this summer before heading to the University of Wyoming to study Mechanical Engineering. “Serving as a leader on a backpacking trip felt like the ultimate full circle moment in my journey with Coombs Outdoors. After ten years of being the one receiving guidance, gear, and encouragement, the roles have flipped. I went from a young participant who needed mentors to close the gap between my community and the mountains, to being the person providing that bridge for others. During a reflection circle at the end of a Lamar Valley trip, hearing a student describe how I helped her through her homesickness was a significant moment, one that inspired me to work at Coombs this summer. After a decade of learning, I’ve realized that the investment Coombs made in me has reached the point where I can finally reinvest it into the next generation.”

Kars4Kids: How has Coombs Outdoors grown or evolved since it began, and what’s changed for the young people you serve?

Molly Watters: We were founded after ski mountaineer Doug Coombs – who inspired people to believe in themselves, share adventures with friends, and have fun in the mountains – passed away in a tragic skiing accident. While raising their young son in Jackson, Doug’s wife Emily noticed a lack of diversity and representation in the outdoor activities that were so important to their family and to community life. So, in 2012 she started the Doug Coombs Foundation (now Coombs Outdoors), honoring her late husband by working to ensure all local youth had the opportunity to ski and participate in the activities enjoyed by their peers, no matter the barriers their family experienced. Emily started with skiing, but her long term goal was to keep kids active year round. Coombs Outdoors launched summer programs in 2017 and dramatically expanded year-round programming in 2020 to support families during COVID. Coombs Outdoors has come a long way since Emily’s first winter with 28 ski school participants, now serving over 450 kids in 24 programs year-round. Those young skiers have come a long way, too, with many headed off to new adventures in college and beyond. Many are even working at Coombs to pass on their experiences to the next generation of kids.

Kars4Kids: What’s next for Coombs Outdoors?

Molly Watters: After rapidly growing for the last many years, we are focusing on sustainable operations. Our demand and waitlists continue to increase, but we are currently taking a moment to slow our roll and instead prioritizing quality over quantity. We will continue to streamline program structures, develop specific offerings requested by families (especially afterschool programs, swimming lessons, and spring break), and welcome as many new high-need students as possible, especially from school district referrals. We also plan to continue building out our leadership program for 9-10th graders, providing opportunities for this age group to take on new challenges and responsibilities. We are also excited to integrate the newly adopted Camina Conmigo adult and family programs into our Coombs program structure. We plan to strengthen our combined suite of offerings and launch family programs where our youth participants and their families can all experience the outdoors
